Britain's most senior cardinal said that Roman Catholic priests should be able to marry and have children.
Cardinal Keith O'brien, who will be part of the conclave tasked with choosing a new pope to replace Benedict XVI, said the church's requirement for priests to be celibate was not of "divine origin" and should be reconsidered.
The 74-year-old told the BBC that many priests have found it very difficult to cope with celibacy as they lived out their priesthood, and felt the need of a companion, of a woman, to whom they could get married and raise a family of their own.
O'brien will have a say in who succeeds Benedict after he stands down on February 28.

When the armored car set off for the Brussels airport carrying $50 million worth of precious stones from Antwerp's diamond district, eight gunmen knew all about it.

One of the biggest diamond heists in recent memory was about to go down.

The thieves surely knew it would be too risky to make their move in Antwerp, which is the world capital of diamond-cutting, 43 kilometers from the airport. The city's diamond industry has some 2,000 surveillance cameras, police monitoring and countless identity controls to protect its $200 million in daily trade of rough and polished gems.

And the thieves no doubt realized that once Swiss Flight LX789 was airborne Monday night on its way to Zurich, the diamonds tucked in its hold, it would be too late to get their hands on the gems.

But the airport's 25-kilometer fence and the transfer of the diamonds from the armored car on the tarmac to the hold of the Fokker 100 twin-engine jet — now that held potential.

After weeks of lashing rain, snow, sleet and black ice, Monday evening was finally as good as it gets in late winter in Belgium. Crisp, cold air meant dry roads for a perfect getaway, and winter's early darkness was a blessing for those needing stealth.

About 20 minutes before the flight's scheduled 8:05 p.m. departure, the robbers hid in a construction site outside the airport fence. Then they apparently cut through the fence and, in two black cars with blue police lights flashing, drove onto the tarmac, speeding straight to pier A, where the armored car had just finished transferring the diamonds to the Fokker.

Dressed in dark police clothing and hoods, the thieves whipped out machine guns and stopped the pilots and the transport security crew in their tracks.

The 29 passengers?

"They saw nothing," Anja Bijnens of the Brussels prosecutor's office said Tuesday. The thieves "never fired a shot. They never injured anyone."

With speed and precision, the thieves opened the plane's hold, picked out 120 parcels and loaded them into the cars.

"Afterward, they made a high-speed getaway," Bijnens said, estimating the whole operation took five minutes.

By late Tuesday, investigators had found the charred remains of a van most likely used in the heist but little else.

Because of the heist's clockwork precision, there was immediate speculation the thieves had help from the inside. But Bijnens said only that the investigation is still going on.

Embarrassed airport officials were left to explain how thieves could so smoothly get in, stage a robbery and make a clean getaway. Diamond industry officials who pride themselves on the security of their trade were equally mortified.

Airport spokesman Jan Van Der Cruijsse could not explain how the area could be so vulnerable. "We abide by the most stringent rules," he said, noting the same apply to other European airports.

Philip Baum, an aviation security consultant in Britain, called the robbery unsettling — not just because the fence was breached, but because the response did not appear to have been immediate. That, he said, raised questions of whether alarms were ringing in the right places.

"It does seem very worrying that someone can actually have the time to drive two vehicles onto the airport, effect the robbery and drive out without being intercepted," Baum said, raising the specter of terrorists exploiting such lapses as well.

Air transport is considered the safest way of transporting small, high-value items, logistics experts say, a fact reflected by relatively cheap insurance policies. Unlike a car or a truck, an airplane is unlikely to be waylaid by robbers once it is in motion. It's also considered highly secure before departure and after arrival because the aircraft is always within an airport.

The stolen parcels contained rough and polished stones bound for Switzerland, where many of the packages were intended for different handlers.

Monday's heist was a fresh blow to Antwerp's major industry, which prides itself on discretion and security
The Pentagon on Friday grounded its fleet of F-35 fighter jets after discovering a cracked engine blade in one plane.

The problem was discovered during what the Pentagon called a routine inspection at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., of an F-35A, the Air Force version of the sleek new plane. The Navy and the Marine Corps are buying other versions of the F-35, which is intended to replace older fighters like the Air Force F-16 and the Navy F/A-18.

All versions — a total of 51 planes — were grounded yesterday (22nd) pending a more in-depth evaluation of the problem discovered at Edwards. None of the planes have been fielded for combat operations; all are undergoing testing
The White House said Tuesday that that the Obama administration has repeatedly taken up its concerns about Chinese Cyber theft at the highest levels of the Chinese government, including with Chinese military officials.

The U.S. comment followed a report by a U.S. computer security company that said a secretive Chinese military unit is believed to be behind a series of hacking attacks, which prompted a strong denial by Beijing.

"We are aware of the Mandiant Report that you are referring to and we are aware of its contents, but I am not going to talk about assessments, intelligence assessments, that we make or may be making. But, you are correct in noting the president's keen focus on this issue. It is a major challenge for us in the national security arena. The United States has substantial and growing concerns about the threats to U.S. economic and national security posed by cyber intrusions, including the theft of commercial information.''

''As the President said in the State of the Union, quote, "We know that foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets." The President also said, "We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy." That is why the United States government is taking an active approach to addressing the issue of cyber-theft,'' said Jay Carney

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, who has won 57% of the votes at the election and hopes to get 73% of the seats in 137 Congress says he will go ahead with socialist reforms to empower the low-income majority and dismantle what he called an elitist system that controlled the state and neglected the poor.

He said his administration would be a “legislative steamroller to serve the interests of the Ecuadorean people, it will deepen the citizen's revolution, build a new homeland and make it irreversible."

Correa first took office in 2007 vowing to increase revenue from the OPEC nation's oil resources and cut debt obligations to fund spending on roads, hospitals and schools.

Among the bills Correa has pledged to push are a plan to distribute idle land among the poor, and a media law to regulate content in newspapers and TV networks - which could stoke an ongoing confrontation with opposition media.

Correa said Latin American countries should join forces to protect themselves from "abuse" by foreign investors.

"We have to continue working toward unity because together we can set the rules," he said. "If we're divided, then the capitalists will set the rules and they will continue abusing, wrecking our countries,

A British theater producer, who has produced a drama about homosexuals, has been deported to Britain from Uganda, while his local girlfriend and two children were left behind.
This person whose name is David Cecil, was arrested in September last year, since homosexuality is prohibited by law in Uganda. This drama is based on a story of a Gay businessman, who was assassinated by his employees.

His charges were dropped due to the lack of evidence.
He was again arrested in Wednesday last week, on the grounds that,he is ‘an undesirable person’. According to the British Embassy, he was deported on Monday.
A British Foreign Office Spokesman has told the B.B.C. that, they are concerned that, he was deported, without giving an opportunity to appeal against the court order.
Since there is no legal protection for homosexuals in Uganda, they are subjected to social rejections and physical assaults.
The US Navy SEAL who personally shot to death former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden says he has been neglected by the US government. The poverty-stricken ex-commando is now struggling to feed his family and pay for healthcare.

Despite killing America’s most wanted man, the US Navy SEAL referred to only as “the Shooter” has transitioned back to a civilian life plagued by poverty. The Shooter, who remains anonymous, retired from the SEALs in September 2012, thirty-six months before the 20-year requirement for retirement benefits.

And the government makes no exceptions when it comes to retirement benefits – not even for one of the Americans responsible for striking the most crushing blow against al-Qaeda.

“What is [hard] to understand is that a man with hundreds of successful war missions, one of the most decorated combat veterans of our age, who capped his career by terminating bin Laden, has no landing pad in civilian life,” writes Phil Bronstein, Executive Chair of the Center for Investigative Reporting, for Esquire.

Aside from remaining anonymous and therefore lacking recognition from the American public, the US government appears to have forgotten the Shooter’s significance in the raid that killed the most wanted terrorist. Without a pension, healthcare, or any sort of government protection, the Shooter has been left in the dark by the agency he dedicated his life to.

China has warned that the US sanctions recently imposed against a Chinese individual and certain companies over their alleged trading with Iran will harm Beijing’s relations with Washington, urging the US to “correct its mistaken policy.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement on Monday that the US measure "seriously violates the norms of international relations and harms China's interests."

"China urges the United States to immediately correct its mistaken policy and revoke these irrational sanctions toward the relevant companies and individuals and cease taking actions that harm China's interests and China-US relations," the statement further read.

The United States on Monday imposed sanctions on a Chinese businessman and a number of firms over the allegation that they have sold Iran items banned under the US Arms Control Act and its Export Administration Act.

According to a notice published on the US Federal Register website, the sanctions took effect on February 5.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Over the false allegation, Washington and the European Union have imposed several rounds of illegal unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran refutes the allegation and argues that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The latest US sanctions, announced on February 5, target Iranian oil revenues.

Over the last decade Russia’s Central Bank acquired 570 metric tons of gold. The amount is almost triple the weight of the American Statue of Liberty and makes Russia the world’s biggest buyer of gold.

The amount is a quarter more than runner-up China, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Countries like Russia and China use such stockpiles as an economic buffer against another wave of economic crisis or US dollar devaluation as both remain wary of the US Federal Reserve’s stability and prefer to hedge their bets on gold.

It’s also proven a sound investment and opportunity for the Russian state to make money, with gold prices crawling upwards over the past 12 years, gaining 12% in 2012 alone.  On Monday gold traded at $1650 per ounce and analysts expect the price to keep growing in 2013 to reach $1825 by the end of the year. However French investment bank Natixis dampened the outlook by forecasting a drop in price to $1500 by 2014, Finmarket.ru reports.

But the link between high gold prices and falling crude has plagued Russia in the past. In 1998, when Russia defaulted on $40 billion of domestic debt, it took 28 barrels of crude to buy an ounce of gold, according to Bloomberg research. Two years later, when Vladimir Putin came to power, an ounce was worth 11.5 barrels. By 2005 the ratio had dropped to 6.5 and that is when President Putin ordered his Central Bank to buy. In just a month the proportion of gold in Russia’s total reserve rose from 2.2% to 3.5%.

In 2000 Vladimir Putin inherited a country with 384 metric tons of gold and more than doubled its gold reserve in 12 years – according to official data from World Gold Council, in October 2012 gold made up 9.6% of Russia’s national forex reserve and stood at 936.7 metric tons.

However it is still far from its historic high – in 1941 Russia held a record 2800 tons of the precious metal and thanks to these reserves successfully recovered after World War II.

Russia’s gold rush still doesn’t mean it tops the list of global gold owners. The United States holds the leading position with 8133.5 tons of gold which make 75.4% of country’s total reserve. Germany runs second with 3391.3 tons and the IMF third with 2814 tons. China and Russia are sitting in sixth and eighth place respectively.

China however is suspected of downplaying its actual volume of gold by 3-4 times, Zerohedge news website reports, and prepares to introduce Yuan as world’s reserve currency. Back in 2009 China set a goal to overtake the US in the rankings. When the Chinese Central bank is ready to officially declare its actual gold reserve volume, world markets will experience serious problems, Zerohedge.com believes.

Major global investor and consulting adviser to the Obama administration, George Soros also appears to have a golden investment streak. In August 2012 it was reported, Mr. Soros offloaded over a million shares in financial companies and banks and purchased $130 million in gold. His move to sell stocks and beef up on gold, is being interpreted by some as a sign of changing investment strategy in the world market.

North Korea on Tuesday said it had conducted a “successful” third underground nuclear test, in a move that brought quick condemnation from the United Nations and the North’s neighbours and is set to heighten regional tensions.

The State-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said a “miniaturised” nuclear device had been detonated successfully at the test site.

The test was reported to have taken place at a test site in the North Hamgyeong province, where the Punggye-ri nuclear complex that conducted tests in 2006 and 2009 is located. The previous nuclear test in 2009 resulted in fresh resolutions aimed at the North from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), tighter sanctions and increased tensions with South Korea and Japan.

UN, South Korea deplore test

Tuesday’s test brought quick condemnations from the United Nations and the North’s neigbours. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement condemned the test as “a clear and grave violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions”. “It is deplorable that Pyongyang defied the strong and unequivocal call from the international community to refrain from any further provocative measures,” he said.

South Korea described the test as a violation of U.N. resolutions and as an “unacceptable threat”, the Seoul-based Yonhap news agency reported. “North Korea won’t be able to avoid grave responsibility,” said the statement, which was issued shortly after President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency National Security Council meeting.

South Korea has requested the UNSC to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday evening, an official told Yonhap.

In Tokyo, Japanese officials said they would deploy military jets to survey the radiation levels following the test. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the country was considering imposing “unilateral sanctions” on the North.

News of the test first emerged early on Tuesday morning, when a magnitude 5.1 “artificial earthquake” was reported near a nuclear test site at 11.57 am local time (8.27 am IST). Tremors were also felt in parts of northeastern China near the border with North Korea.

A South Korean defence ministry official told Yonhap the nuclear device had, according to initial estimates, yielded 6-7 kilotons, suggesting Tuesday’s test had exceeded the yields reported in tests in 2006 and 2009.

A third nuclear test was expected by Chinese and Western officials sometime this week, with Saturday – the birthday of former leader Kim Jong-il – earlier seen as a likely date. The North had notified the United States and China a day earlier, according to South Korean officials quoted by Yonhap.

On Monday, Kim Jong-il’s son and successor Kim Jong-un, who took over as the new leader following his father’s death in December 2011, had signalled that the North – officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) – would continue with conducting long-range rocket tests despite recent warnings from the UNSC and even China, the North’s only ally.

Call for tougher approach

In recent weeks, Chinese officials in Beijing have said they had cautioned the North against going ahead with the test. While Beijing has continued to support the regime as it fears instability on its northeastern borders, Chinese analysts and State media have recently called on the country to take a tougher approach in dealing with the North.

The Communist Party-run Global Times said in an editorial last week, “if North Korea insists on a third nuclear test despite attempts to dissuade it, it must pay a heavy price”. “The assistance it will be able to receive from China should be reduced,” the newspaper said.“The Chinese government should make this clear beforehand to shatter any illusions Pyongyang may have.”

However, China, which is the North’s only ally and biggest source of financial and food aid, views the country as a crucial strategic buffer against the U.S. and its allies in the region, and has shown no signs of rethinking its close strategic ties following the previous nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

Officials said the six-metre reptile, weighing more than 1,000kg, flipped over with a bloated stomach and was declared dead several hours later.
The crocodile, blamed for the death of at least one person, was caught in September 2011 and then became the star attraction of an eco-tourism park.
It was formally declared the world’s largest in captivity by Guinness World Records last year.
The crocodile, which was given the name Lolong, was captured in the town of Bunawan after a three-week hunt involving dozens of people.

The giant reptile, which measured 6.4m (21ft) and weighed in at 1,075kg (2,370lb), had begun to draw local and foreign tourists to the town.
Bunawan Mayor Edwin Elorde said Lolong had been off colour for a month.
“He refused to eat since last month and we noticed a change in the colour of his faeces,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper. “Our personnel also noticed an unusual ballooning of the reptile’s belly.”
Local vet Alex Collantes said that unseasonably cold weather could have affected the crocodile.
Mr Elorde told the Inquirer wildlife experts would conduct an investigation into the death and said he hoped Lolong’s body could be preserved.
“In that way, people can still look and marvel at him,” he said.
Australian media say the mantle of largest saltwater crocodile in captivity may now pass back to Cassius, a 5.48m reptile housed at a crocodile farm near Cairns in Queensland.

A creative group of Palestinians has needed only a mobile phone, sarcastic vision and an internet connection to be showing their day to day difficulties they are facing.

A group of Palestinians has created a comical version of the South Korean’s song “Gangnum style” and which has been named as “Gangnum Gaza Style”. In this video there was a dance performed by five adults along with a child who are wearing same type of costumes by which they are trying to highlight the problems in the region.

Further one of the singers who backed there was a word “unemployment” has been written in English as well as Arabian language. On their way, the vehicle of this group has stopped without fuel and they have to be pushed the vehicle. They have performed a ‘Gangnum’ style dance whilst during time.

When they arrived to the fuel station, there was a board written as “fuel not available” and on that reason they used donkeys as a way of their transport. The message they wish to convey on that was to highlight their problems such as sufferings, congestions, unemployment and non availability of the electricity etc. said a group member Volid Anthony to the Reuters.

Further, the United Nations has said that the present unemployment rate of the Gaza region is 40% but their local economist states that is was about 60% at present. The group leader Muhamnad Barakath has stated that using simple instruments to convey a message to all over the world, he should pay his gratitude to the God.

However the reason for this sad situation in the Gaza region was the barriers imposed by the Israel government in the years 2001 & 2007. Palestine (especially the Gaza region) survives on foreign aid and they have lots of liabilities to state and private banks.

Further they try to tease for the wealthy people living in Seoul by this song.

Vatican has announced that, Pope Benedict XVI has decided to resign.
The 85 year old Pope has taken this decision due to bad health conditions, while the resignation will take effect from 28th of February.
Pope Benedict XVI took office on April 2005, following the death of Pope John Paul II.

A closely clustered group of pyramids and a number of graves have been found at a site called Sedeinga.

The discovery is unusual due to the way that the pyramids are densely concentrated within a small area, in one instance researchers found 13 of them packed in to an area the size of an NBA basketball court. It is believed that these pyramids date back 2,000 years to a time when Sudan was home to a kingdom known as Kush which shared borders with Egypt and the Roman Empire. The Egyptian pyramids are likely to have been an influence in their construction.

"The density of the pyramids is huge," said researcher Vincent Francigny. "Because it lasted for hundreds of years they built more, more, more pyramids and after centuries they started to fill all the spaces that were still available in the necropolis."

At least 35 small pyramids, along with graves, have been discovered clustered closely together at a site called Sedeinga in Sudan

Apple makes a bold penetration into the sex market.
Technology website JISMONDO jolted the world today with news Apple, Inc. was seeking to exploit the world’s preoccupation with sex. The website released details of a top-secret product development effort code named “Feral Cat” dipping Apple’s wick into the multi-billion market for sexual devices and content which has seen little innovation the past few decades.

WWN has secured classified images of a sleek, multi-use device prototype to be marketed under the iClimax brand. The unit combines vibrator, digital media, webcam, microphone and fluid dispenser functionality, plus corded and Wi-Fi connectivity for iPad & iPhone devices. In step with Apple’s business strategy, it will develop and license a range of peripherals as well as audio and video content that can be utilized on the iClimax platform. Mass multiplayer contests are also contemplated once the device has reached broad distribution.

Noted Apple watcher Josh Lowensohn of CNET said, “Apple’s move into the untapped sex market is a high stakes gambit with the potential to dramatically expand its global potential at a time when sales and its share price have been flagging. The launch of iClimax is a natural evolution of convenience and convergence in consumer devices, but it is not without substantial brand risks. Sources close to Apple say a prudish [Steve] Jobs had sidelined the project but “horn-dog” Tim Cook green-lighted the estimated $250M development program early on in his tenure.
Cook reassured dubious staffers saying “If we build they will come. It’s not about need. This company was built on creating way cool products and then marketing the sh_t out of them.”
An App market is also planned once final design details are available. It is not known if iClimax content will be available on Apple’s iTunes portal or a separate service. WWN researchers confirmed an offshore entity controlled by Apple has registered the URLs: iPorn, iDiddle, iYesYesYes and iPleasedontstop. Our researches have identified other Apple trademark registrations such as iWad and iRoxoff thought to be targeted at the male demographic.
Rumors of celebrity spokespersons for the launch campaign include… actually we won’t even go there. But Apple fans seem generally pleased with the development, as reflected in a volley of comments on Twitter earlier today:
@AppleMovesMe: OMG! I was already a fan of vibrate mode! Can I get this under my Verizon plan?
@SteakNpotatoes: I’m not sure that’s hygienic, and you could get electrocuted.
@Jung&Wrestless: Sounds like “pocket dialed” could get a lot more interesting

Taiwan has opened a Barbie-themed restaurant in Taipei called the Barbie Cafe, after the US toy company Mattel licensed Taiwanese restaurant group Sinlaku to build the restaurant around the iconic doll. As expected, everything inside is pink – chairs are hot pink and adorned with tutu skirts and red corset lacing, while walls display Barbie illustrations showing off many stylish outfits. There's even a life-size Barbie "box" for customers who want to feel like a real-live doll. Female waitresses are dressed in pink outfits complete with tutus and tiaras. Male servers are dressed to look like Barbie's long-term boyfriend, Ken

The menu was created by professional nutritionists and includes calorie counts for each item. Culinary choices include hazelnut tiramisu, colorful macaroon cookies served in martini classes, Philadelphia steak salad, salmon beauty salad, an ornate Barbie cake and the Barbie 128, a pink beverage named for the address of the eatery.

The Barbie Cafe is the first Barbie-themed restaurant in the world.

We picked Taiwan because theme restaurants are very popular and successful here. We are very confident that the Barbie Cafe can promote our brand image," said Iggy Yip, a senior manager in Mattel's consumer products division in Greater China.

While some are raving about the new restaurant, not everyone is pleased. Some women in Taiwan lashed out at the idea saying it continues to invoke an anti-women image and promotes the sexualization of Asian women.

Rhiannon Williams, editor of feminist website The Vagenda Magazine, expressed her adamant distaste for the Barbie Cafe. “I cannot imagine anything less pleasant and more nausea-inducing than a Barbie themed restaurant. Not only because I prefer low-impact environments and none of the major food groups are pink for a reason, but also because Barbie is an outdated model of stereotypical femininity and needs to die a death," said Williams.
“I think this is part of the problem that we women face in Asia,” Jamie Yo, a 25-year-old recent university graduate, told Bikyanews.com. “I think the idea of Barbie is inherently anti-women and to have a café is wrong and perpetuates these myths about women and girls in Asia.”

A study of Google searches has found "significant discrimination" in advert results depending on the perceived race of names searched for.

Harvard professor Latanya Sweeney said names typically associated with black people were more likely to produce ads related to criminal activity.

In her paper, Prof Sweeney suggested that Google searches may expose "racial bias in society".

Google has said it "does not conduct any racial profiling".

In a statement to the BBC, the company said: "We also have an 'anti' and violence policy which states that we will not allow ads that advocate against an organisation, person or group of people."

When placing ads with Google, companies are able to specify which keywords they would like to target.

"It is up to individual advertisers to decide which keywords they want to choose to trigger their ads," the search giant said.
Arrested?

The study analysed the type of advertisements that appeared on Google when certain names were searched for.

It looked at Google.com's core search engine, as well as the search function of Reuters.com - which also displays Google's advertising.

Prof Sweeney's investigation suggests that names linked with black people - as defined by a previous study into racial discrimination in the workplace - were 25% more likely to have results that prompted the searcher to click on a link to search criminal record history.
She found that names like Leroy, Kareem and Keisha would yield advertisements that read "Arrested?", with a link to a website which could perform criminal record checks.

Searches for names such as Brad, Luke and Katie would not - instead more likely to offer websites that can provide general contact details.

"There is discrimination in the delivery of these ads," concluded Prof Sweeney, adding that there was a less than 1% chance that the findings could be based on chance.

"Alongside news stories about high school athletes and children can be ads bearing the child's name and suggesting arrest. This seems concerning on many levels."
User habits

However, she was reluctant to pinpoint a cause for the discrepancies, saying that to do so required "further information about the inner workings of Google AdSense".

She noted that one possible cause may be Google's "smart" algorithms - technology which automatically adapts advertising placement based on mass-user habits.

In other words, it may be that the search engines are reflecting society's own prejudices - as the advertising results Google serves up are often based on the most popular links previous users have clicked on.

"Over time, as people tend to click one version of ad text over others, the weights change," Prof Sweeney explained.

"So the ad text getting the most clicks eventually displays more frequently."

She argued that technology should be used to counteract this effect.

"In the broader picture, technology can do more to thwart discriminatory effects and harmonise with societal norms.

"Ads responding to name searches appear in a specific information context and technology controls that context."
Paris: Over hundreds of Islamist militants have been killed in nearly one month of French-led intervention Mali, French Defence Minister said on Wednesday.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that “several hundred” militants were killed in French airstrikes and direct combat with French troops, as per a BBC report.

Meanwhile, France is also planning to begin troops withdrawal from Mali in March.

"I think that starting in March, if everything goes as planned, the number of our troops should diminish," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a newspaper interview.

Fabius added that terrorist threats remain and that the fight isn't over yet, but that ultimately Africans and Malians themselves need to take responsibility for the region's security.

French troops’ withdrawal announcement came as forces from France and Chad secured a key bastion in northern Mali, the city of Kidal.

France has some 4,000 troops in Mali as of Tuesday, a French military official said. That's about the same number as France had at the height of its 11-year military presence in Afghanistan.

France launched the Mali operation last month to drive back al-Qaida-linked extremists who had seized the north of the country, imposing harsh rule on local populations, and had started pushing toward Mali's capital. France's government fears the region could become a haven for international terrorists.

A U.N. diplomat said Tuesday that the French are talking about another month or so of active engagement in Mali, with one aim being the interruption of supplies to the extremists.

The UN Security Council is likely to wait until the end of February, when the military action has hopefully ended, to adopt a new resolution authorizing a U.N. peacekeeping force for Mali, the diplomat said. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the Mali conflict.

A tsunami triggered by an earthquake has hit the Solomon Islands, with at least four people reported dead.
The quake, with a magnitude 8.0, struck at 01:12 GMT near the Santa Cruz islands, part of the Solomon Islands nation, the US Geological Survey said.
A tsunami measuring 0.9m (3ft) then hit Lata in the far eastern Solomons and a tsunami warning was briefly trigged for several Pacific nations.
Dozens of homes on Santa Cruz are reported to have been destroyed
Lata is the main town on Nendo, also known as Santa Cruz Island, which is the largest island in the Santa Cruz island chain.

The worst of the damage was said to have been on the western coast, with one report putting the waves there at 1.5m.
Robert Iroga, press secretary to the Solomons prime minister, told the BBC that the waves west of Lata had travelled some 500m inland, and that three villages had been damaged.
He said the latest reports from the region were that four people had been killed.
Police are travelling to the area, he said, and the priority is to ensure the local airport is functioning so aid and supplies can be flown in.
But medical staff at the Lata Hospital put the number killed at five - four elderly people and one young boy.
Irene Scott, who works at the Power FM radio station in the Solomons, said several people had gone to local hospitals for injuries including broken bones.
But she told the BBC that most people had moved to higher ground as soon as the quake was felt, reducing the casualties.
'No threat' Initial reports by the USGS said the quake had a shallow depth of 5.8km (3.6 miles) but it later revised the figure to 28.7km (17.8 miles).
Luke Taula, a fisheries officer in Lata, told Reuters news agency the wave came as several small tidal surges.
"We have small waves come in, then go out again, then come back in. The waves have reached the airport terminal," he told the news agency.
Tsunami warnings were issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna islands, but later cancelled.
"No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas although some may experience small sea level changes," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
The Solomon Islands form part of the Ring Of Fire, a zone of volcanic arcs and oceanic trenches encircling the Pacific basin.
The 8.0 earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, the largest measuring 6.6 magnitude.
The region has been experiencing a series of smaller quakes in recent days.
In 2007 an 8.1 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that killed at least 52 people in the Solomons and left thousands homeless.
Lynsi Torres, the 30-year-old owner and president of In-N-Out Burger, is one of the youngest female billionaires on the planet, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire's Index .

How did that happen?

She inherited the fast food chain after a series of deaths in the family, Seth Lubove at Bloomberg News reported.

In-N-Out was founded by her grandparents, Harry and Esther Snyder. Harry died in 1976 and one of his sons, Rich, took over. Rich died in a plane crash when he was 41, and Torres' father, Harry Guy Snyder, took over in 1993.   Guy died in 1999 of a prescription drug overdose at the age of 49. Esther, Torres' grandmother, controlled In-N-Out until 2006, when she died at 86.

That left Torres as the only heir to In-N-Out. She currently has half ownership through a trust, but will get the entire company upon turning 35.

Torres doesn't have a college degree and is on her third marriage. Oh, and as Gawker's Hamilton Nolan noted, she's also a competitive drag racer.

She's pretty mysterious, too. Apparently, even people in the restaurant industry don't know much about her.

“I have no clue about her,” restaurant consultant Janet Lowder told Bloomberg. “I was even surprised there was a granddaughter.”

We do know that she owns a $17.4 million, 16,600-square-foot mansion in Bradbury, California. It has seven bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, and a whole bunch of amenities

DNA tests have confirmed that human remains found buried beneath an English car park are those of the country's King Richard III.

British scientists announced Monday they are convinced "beyond reasonable doubt" that a skeleton found during an archaeological dig in Leicester, central England, last August is that of the former king, who was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.

Mitochondrial DNA extracted from the bones was matched to Michael Ibsen, a Canadian cabinetmaker and direct descendant of Richard III's sister, Anne of York, and a second distant relative, who wishes to remain anonymous.

Experts say other evidence -- including battle wounds and signs of scoliosis, or curvature of the spine -- found during the search and the more than four months of tests since strongly support the DNA findings -- and suggest that history's view of the king as a hunchbacked villain may have to be rewritten.
Tracking down Richard III's remains
Skeletal remains are of Richard III

Ibsen said he reacted with "stunned silence" when told the closely-guarded results. "I never thought I'd be a match, and certainly not that it would be so close, but the results look like a carbon copy," he told reporters.

The skeleton was discovered buried among the remains of what was once the city's Greyfriars friary. After centuries of demolition and rebuilding work, the grave's exact location had been lost to history, and there were even reports that the defeated monarch's body had been dug up and thrown into a nearby river.

Richard III was the last Plantagenet king of England, and the last English king to die in battle.

Born on October 2, 1452, he grew up during the bitter and bloody Wars of the Roses, which pitted two aristocratic dynasties, the House of York and the House of Lancaster, against each other in a fight for the throne.

The wars, which took their name from the families' symbols, a red rose for Lancaster and a white rose for York, were fought between 1455 and 1485.

While Richard was still a child, they led to the deaths of his father, the Duke of York, and his brother Edmund, and forced him into exile.

As the youngest son, Richard was never expected to become king, and instead spent many years as a nobleman, apparently intent on founding his own dynasty. His brother Edward became king in 1461, and Richard proved a loyal supporter.

"Shakespeare paints a picture of Richard as a scheming, plotting villain always aiming for the throne, but if that was the case, why didn't he kill the king?" says historian John Ashdown Hill, author of "The Last Days of Richard III."

"That would have been the easiest way, but he served his brother loyally for over 20 years."

When Edward IV died unexpectedly in 1483, he was succeeded by his 12-year-old son, Edward V, with Richard as his protector.

Within weeks, however, parliament had declared the boy illegitimate, and installed Richard as king in his place.

Edward and his brother were held in the Tower of London, and later disappeared. Richard has long been blamed for their murder.

The remains will be reburied in Leicester Cathedral, close to the site of his original grave, once the full analysis of the bones is completed.

Richard III's body was found in a roughly-hewn grave, which experts say was too small for the body, forcing it to be squeezed in to an unusual position.

Its feet had been lost at some point in the intervening five centuries, but the rest of the bones were in good condition, which archaeologists and historians say was incredibly lucky, given how close later building work came to them -- brick foundations ran alongside part of the trench, within inches of the body.

What was initially thought to be a barbed arrowhead found among the dead king's vertebrae turned out instead to be a Roman nail, disturbed from an earlier level of excavation.

Archaeologists say their examination of the skeleton shows Richard met a violent death: They found evidence of 10 wounds -- eight to the head and two to the body -- which they believe were inflicted at or around the time of death.

"The skull was in good condition, although fragile, and was able to give us detailed information," said bioarchaeologist Jo Appleby, who led the exhumation of the remains last year.

The king had suffered two severe blows to the head, either of which would have been fatal, according to Appleby. The injuries suggest that he had lost his helmet in the course of his last bloody battle.

Appleby said there were also signs that Richard's corpse was mistreated after his death, with evidence of several "humiliation injuries," which fitted in with historical records of the body being displayed, naked, in Leicester before being laid to rest.

Richard Buckley, the lead archaeologist on the project said the unusual position of the skeleton's arms and hands suggested he may have been buried with his hands tied.

Investigators from the University of Leicester had been examining the remains for months.

Others got their first glimpse of the battle-scarred skull that may have once worn the English crown early Monday when the university released a photograph ahead of its announcement.

Turi King, who carried out the DNA analysis, said it was a "real relief" when the results came through.

"I went really quiet. I was seeing all these matches coming back, thinking, 'That's a match, and that's a match, and that's a match.' At that point I did a little dance around the lab."

King pointed out that "in a generation's time, the DNA match would not have been possible, since both individuals used in the tests are the last of their line," a fact echoed by Ibsen, who told CNN before the results came through that "they caught us just in time."

The initial discovery of the remains provoked much debate in Britain as to what would happen with the body, if it were proven to be that of Richard III, with many calling for a state funeral at Westminster Abbey, and others backing a burial in York Minster, in keeping with the king's heritage as a member of the House of York.

But on Monday those involved in the search said he would be reinterred in Leicester Cathedral, the closest church to the original grave site in a memorial service expected to be held early next year.

Canon Chancellor David Monteith said it was important to remember that as well as being the subject of important historical and scientific research, the skeleton also represented "the mortal remains of a person, an annointed Christian king," and as such should be treated with dignity.

Supporters of the infamous king, including members of the Richard III Society, hope the discovery will now force academics to re-examine history, which they say has been tainted by exaggerations and false claims about Richard III since the Tudor era.

Screenwriter Philippa Langley, who championed the search for several years, told CNN she wanted "the establishment to look again at his story," saying she wanted to uncover the truth about "the real Richard, before the Tudor writers got to him."

"This has been an extraordinary journey of discovery," Langley said. "We came with a dream and today that dream has been realized. This is an historic moment that will rewrite the history books."
