In the Mindoro oriental area of San Thiyaydora in Central Philippines, the Mayor had been elected by the toss of a coin. The reason had been that two candidate had polled the identical number of preferential votes.
It was then decided by the election officers with the consent of the two candidates to choose the winner by tossing a coin twice. Accordingly it was decided the one who calls ‘head would be nominated as the winner and to become the Mayor. The two candidates Mervin Feraren and Boyen Pai were the eligible candidates who both polled 3236 preferential votes. At the first instance both called correctly as ‘head’...........
Hence the coin had to be tossed once more. This time the luck was with President Benigno Akino’s Liberal party member Mervin Feraren who call ‘head’ became successful.
The result was accepted in a gentlemanly manner by both the candidates. The loser Pai shook hand with the winner.
