Russian protest leader Alexei Navalny urged a court on Wednesday to throw out what he said were trumped-up charges intended to silence one of President Vladimir Putin's sharpest critics.
A court in the industrial city of Kirov adjourned to consider his request to return the case to state prosecutors for review on day two of his trial on charges of stealing from a timber firm that carry a possible 10-year jail term.
The most prominent opposition leader to be tried in post-Soviet Russia, Navalny, 36, has suggested Putin ordered the trial to stop his criticism of “swindlers and thieves” in government and sideline him as a potential presidential rival.
A recent opinion poll indicated about 37 percent of Russians know who Navalny is, a sharp increase in the past two years, but only 14 percent would vote for him in a presidential election................

Putin won almost two-thirds of votes in an election last year.  “The case absolutely cannot be tried in court in its current form,” the anti-corruption campaigner told reporters after Judge Sergei Blinov ordered a more than three-hour recess to consider his plea to send the case back to state prosecutors.
“It's raw, it's tendentious, there are different numbers cited everywhere, different amounts of timber are mentioned, and so on,” Navalny said, adding that he was surprised the judge had agreed to consider the defence appeal.
Navalny, in jeans and a blue shirt, sat taking notes at the front of the court as the judge spoke. At times he turned to consult his wife Yulia who sat behind him in the packed courtroom in Kirov, about 550 miles (900 km) northeast of Moscow.
Navalny, who organised the biggest protests since Putin rose to power 13 years ago, is accused of stealing 16 million roubles ($510,000) from a timber firm in Kirov that he was advising in 2009 while working for the liberal regional governor.  Tall and clean-cut, Navalny has been a thorn in the side of the government since starting to campaign online against state corruption in 2007. He established himself as a powerful speaker at anti-Putin demonstrations that flared 16 months ago.
POTENTIAL RIVAL
The trial began on April 17 but was adjourned until Wednesday to give the defence more time to prepare.  Many Russians say political life in the former Soviet superpower is riddled with corruption and find it hard to believe Navalny is any better than the rest.
“I think it's more likely that he made some extra money for himself here, just stole it. I don't think it's political at all,” said a housewife out walking with her baby in the centre of Kirov, who gave her name only as Anya.
Marina, a 42-year-old construction engineer, said: “I think that overall it's political, to silence him. But nobody's free of sin these days so apparently there's something that the prosecution can work with to go after him.” Others are simply not interested in the fate of a man who has captured the imagination of urban youth and the emerging middle class in big cities but has failed to strike a chord with the millions of people who live in the provinces.
Navalny is rarely seen on state television, the main source of news for Russians outside major cities.
Since Putin's return to the Kremlin last May after four years as prime minister, two members of the dissident band Pussy Riot have been jailed, a prominent protest leader has been thrown out of parliament and another is under house arrest.  A dozen protesters also face sentences of up to 10 years over clashes with police at a rally on the eve of Putin's inauguration in May, and parliament has pushed through tough new penalties and fines for demonstrators who stray out of line.

North Korea renewed its demand Tuesday for recognition as a nuclear power, saying it was a pre-requisite for the start of any dialogue with the United States.
A commentary in the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper rejected as “totally unacceptable” a US demand that North Korea commit to abandoning its nuclear weapons and missile programme before any talks can begin.
Any meeting at the negotiating table must be “between nuclear weapons states”, it said.
The United States has made it clear that it will never formally accept the North, which carried out its third nuclear test in February, as a nuclear power...........

After a month of escalating military tensions on the Korean peninsula, Seoul, Washington and Pyongyang have begun skirting around the possibility of dialogue.
For the moment, however, most energy is being expended on rejecting each other's pre-conditions.
During a trip to Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo earlier this month, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Pyongyang must first prove it was serious about reining in its nuclear programme.
North Korea responded by demanding the withdrawal of UN sanctions and an end to all future South Korea-US joint military exercises.

US investigators Tuesday told how two suspected pressure cooker bombs sprayed nails and metal pellets into Boston marathon crowds, killing three people and injuring more than 180. But with no claim of responsibility made and police not committing to blaming foreign or domestic militants, Boston harbored widespread questions about the perpetrators as the city and the nation paid tribute to the dead.
US President Barack Obama condemned Monday's attack at the marathon finish line as “an act of terror.” He will attend a special service for the victims in Boston on Thursday.......

US authorities threw virtually every investigation agency into the hunt with more than 1,000 officers working in Boston alone, said Rick DesLauriers, head of the FBI's Boston office.
“This will be a worldwide investigation,” DesLauriers told reporters. “We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects responsible for this despicable crime,” he added.
DesLauriers said fragments of suspected pressure cookers used to pack the bomb had been found and were being put together by experts. He added that metal pellets and nails had also been recovered.
Similar easy-to-make devices are used as roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Shreds of black nylon bags believed to have been used to carry the bombs were also found, the agent said, adding that “the range of suspects and motives remains wide open.” Two US officials said so far there was no indication that Al-Qaeda or other foreign extremist organizations were behind the attack, but they added the investigation was still at an early stage.
“It's too early to draw any conclusions,” one US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.
Doctors, who carried out at least 13 amputations, some at the scene, gave details of the bomb impact.
Among the dead was eight-year-old Martin Richard, who was watching the marathon with his family. His mother suffered a grievous brain injury and his sister lost a leg.
A Chinese woman who was a graduate student at Boston University also died, the university and the Chinese consulate in New York confirmed. However, at the request of her family, her name was not released.

You might not want to try to pop a wheelie while riding this incredible contraption, a 44ft bicycle that has been created by Indonesian villagers out of rusting iron pipe.
It seats just one person and was hand crafted out of 84 feet of piping in Blawe village, Kediri, in East Java. The bicycle has been officially recorded by the Indonesian Record Museum after it beat the previous holder by eight feet..........

But despite breaking the Indonesian title, this effort has a long way to go before it beats the world record. That is held by Mijl van Maers Werkploeg, who built one measuring a whopping 117ft 5in long on August 5, 2011 in Maarheeze in the Netherlands.
To qualify as the longest true bicycle, the Dutchman's creation could have only two wheels and no stabilisers.
The bicycle was operated by two people, one steering at the front and one pedalling at the back.

Scientists have found a way to halve the fat content of chocolate without compromising the treat's silky texture.New technology allows manufacturers to replace up to 50 percent of the fat with fruit juice, vitamin C, water or diet cola.
Stefan A. F. Bon, from the University of Warwick, said: "This approach maintains the things that make chocolate 'chocolatey', but with fruit juice instead of fat............

"Now we're hoping the food industry will take the next steps and use the technology to make tasty, lower-fat chocolate bars and other candy."He said the juice is in the form of micro-bubbles helping the chocolate to retain the velvety mouth-feel.This process also prevents "sugar bloom," the white film that coats the surface of chocolate that has been on the shelf for a while.
A gelling agent called agar makes tiny "sponges" that displace fat.The technology works with dark, milk and white chocolate, Dr Bon says. His team at the University of Warwick has made chocolate infused with apple, orange and cranberry juice.
"Fruit juice-infused candy tastes like an exciting hybrid between traditional chocolate and a chocolate-juice confectionary," he said."
Since the juice is spread out in the chocolate, it doesn't overpower the taste of the chocolate."Dr Bon unveiled his research at a meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

The Syrian Air Force is carrying out both deliberate air strikes against civilians and indiscriminate attacks, a leading rights group has warned.Human Rights Watch says it visited 52 sites in north-western Syria, documenting 59 such unlawful attacks.
It points out that both types of attacks estimated to have killed thousands are serious violations of international law.It criticises Russia and China for blocking UN action against Damascus.Between October 2011 and July 2012 they vetoed three proposed UN Security Council resolutions against the Syrian government.............

HRW says measures by the UN, such as targeted sanctions, an arms embargo and the referral of the situation to the International Criminal Court, are urgently needed. It says the Syrian government's unlawful actions are behind many of the 70,000 deaths estimated to have resulted from the conflict.
In its report Death from the Skies HRW says that since late July 2012 regular air strikes by Syrian Air Force fighter jets and helicopters have been launched on "cities, towns and neighbourhoods under the control of opposition forces".
HRW visited opposition-controlled sites in Aleppo, Idlib and Latakia governorates in the country's north west between last August and December, and spoke to witnesses and victims of attacks, along with four Syrian Air Force defectors.
It also saw some attacks at first hand.Continue reading the main story Many of the sites it visited had been under opposition control for weeks or months, with no recent ground fighting at the time of the attacks.
Nonetheless, it found evidence that government forces had launched strikes and artillery attacks on bakeries and civilians waiting to buy bread, and on hospitals, with strong evidence those facilities had been deliberately targeted.
In other cases, Syrian forces had used means such as unguided bombs, incendiary bombs (which start fires and can cause casualties over large areas), and large high-explosive munitions whose effects were rendered indiscriminate by the nature of their use.
In dozens of cases, HRW found that, "despite high civilian casualties, damage to opposition headquarters and other structures was minimal and, as far as Human Rights Watch could establish, there were no casualties among opposition fighters".
The four defectors told HRW that commanders ordered strikes on urban areas despite being unable to take adequate measures to protect civilians "in part to instil fear in the civilian population in opposition strongholds, and also to deprive the opposition of its support".

BEIJING - China and the United States will set up a working group on cyber-security, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday, as the two sides moved to ease months of tensions and mutual accusations of hacking and Internet theft.
Speaking to reporters in Beijing during a visit to China, Kerry said the United States and China had agreed on the need to speed up action on cyber security, an area that Washington says is its top national security concern.
Cyber security, Kerry said “affects the financial sector, banks, financial transactions, every aspect of nations in modern times are affected by the use of cyber networking and obviously all of us - every nation - has an interest in protecting its people, protecting its rights, protecting its infrastructure”............

Earlier, China's official Xinhua news agency quoted Foreign Minister Wang Yi as telling Kerry in their meeting that China and the United States should make joint efforts to safeguard cyberspace.
Cyberspace should be an area where the two countries can increase mutual trust and cooperation, Wang told Kerry, according to Xinhua.
Beijing and Washington have traded accusations in recent months of massive cyber intrusions. The United States says hacking attacks emanating from China have targeted U.S. government and corporate computer networks among others, stealing government and commercial data.
A U.S. computer security firm released a report in February saying a secretive Chinese military unit is believed to be behind a wave of hacking attacks against the United States.
China claims it is the victim of large-scale cyber attacks from the United States, though it has given few details. Wang repeated to Kerry the Chinese government's oft-stated position that it opposes any form of hacking.
The working group announcement follows other recent calls for dialogue and cooperation. Officials and business executives attending a China-U.S. Internet Industry Forum in Beijing this week sought to find common ground.
“It's important to have a dialogue on this, but it's also important that the dialogue be a means to an end, and the end is really ending these practices,” Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Robert Hormats, who spoke at the forum, told Reuters in an interview.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is meeting China's top leaders in Beijing to press them to exert more pressure on ally North Korea.

Speaking to China's President Xi Jinping on April 13, Kerry said, "This is obviously a critical time with some very challenging issues."

He cited tensions in the Korean Peninsula, but also Iran's nuclear program and the conflict in Syria.

Pyongyang has issued weeks of threats of an impending war following the imposition of UN sanctions after North Korea's third nuclear test in February.............

In Seoul on April 12, Kerry said the United States would never accept North Korea as a nuclear power.

Kerry also said it would be a "huge mistake" if North Korea were to go ahead with an anticipated medium-range missile test.

"I would say, ahead of time, that it is a huge mistake for [North Korean leader Kim Jong Un] to do that because it will further isolate his country and further isolate his people who, frankly, are desperate for food, not missile launches."

South Korea and Japan have been on high alert amid indications that Pyongyang was preparing for a rocket test at any time after it moved two Musudan ballistic missiles to its east coast.

Kerry also repeated the United States will do what it must to defend itself and its allies.

"The rhetoric that we're hearing from North Korea is simply unacceptable by any standard. And I am here to make it clear today on behalf of President [Barack] Obama, and the citizens of the United States, and our bilateral security agreement that the United States will, if needed, defend our allies and defend ourselves."

Kerry urged China -- Pyongyang's only major ally -- to "put some teeth" into efforts to press Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

North Korea refuses to give up its nuclear weapons that it called on April 12 its "treasured" guarantor of security.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye on April 12 said Seoul was also open to holding talks with Pyongyang to calm the tensions.

Meanwhile, the White House said on April 12 that North Korea had not demonstrated the capability to deploy a nuclear-armed missile, a day after the Pentagon's intelligence agency said that the North had a nuclear missile capacity.

The development of Nato-American missiles at the expense of citizens
To combat and do justice against the Iran’s threats with latest nuclear power to develop powerful weapons by Nato-America’s expenses have to be borne by their citizens which have made their civil expenses reduced.
The situation has been predicted to be very precarious. The America is supposed to be called a civilian killing country. For the contract killers the payments are through the citizens. The war has now become something like a business.........

The forces like the war to begin and the situation to prolong. The American army is posted in countries like Russia, China and Korea. What the weapons the America possess is sufficient for a counter attack against Iran

Iran could be home to the world’s first time machine, if claims from an Iranian scientist are to be believed (color us skeptical). According to The Telegraph, a scientist based in Tehran, Iran has registered with the Center for Strategic Inventions a device called “The Aryayek Time Traveling Machine,” which can reportedly allow individuals to peer into the future – up to 8 years into the future, that is.
The time machine isn’t of the police box or compact car variety, however, with the 27-year-old inventor Ali Razeghi stating that it can fit in a briefcase. Likewise, it doesn’t work in the conventional ways a time machine is imagined to work. Rather than whisking users away to the past or future, this device is said to make its predictions based on the touch of a user.
Supposedly by touching the time machine device, it will make a reading 5 to 8 years into that person’s future, providing a print out of the data with 98-percent accuracy. He has created 179 other inventions, and says this particular one has been a work-in-progress since he was 10-years-old. As you might suspect, the government application of such a device has already been discussed...........

Said Razeghi: “Naturally a government that can see five years into the future would be able to prepare itself for challenges that might destabilise it. As such we expect to market this invention among states as well as individuals once we reach a mass production stage.” The reason for why it has not been revealed yet? The inventor says China will steal it.

North Korea has stated that it is ready to launch a military strike on its southern neighbor should South Korean authorities do not give up their confrontational policies.
“Our arms are ready to fire and the exact coordinates are put into the warheads. Once we push the button, it will be fired and the strongholds of our enemies will be turned into a sea of flames,” an anchorwoman for the North Korean state television said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, North Korea has raised at least one missile into its upright firing position, fueling concerns that a launch could happen anytime soon..........

The United States and South Korean militaries have been watching movements of mobile ballistic missiles on the eastern coast of North Korea closely.

The Korean Peninsula has been locked in a cycle of escalating military rhetoric following the participation of nuclear-capable US B-52s and B-2 stealth bombers in recent joint military drills with South Korea.

On April 9, North Korea urged all foreign institutions, enterprises, and tourists in South Korea to leave the country, warning that the Korean Peninsula was nearing a ‘thermonuclear war’.

On March 30, North Korea declared that it was in a “state of war” with South Korea. Pyongyang warned that if Washington and Seoul launched a preemptive attack, the conflict would “not be limited to a local war, but develop into an all-out war, a nuclear war.”

A key article of a bill that would allow same-sex unions in France cleared the Senate on a 179-157 vote following 10 hours of floor debate.
"The vote on this article marks a victory in the fight against homophobia and for tolerance and democracy," said Francois Rebsamen, head of the Socialist group in the Senate, said in a statement after the vote Tuesday.
Despite efforts by Senate opponents of same-sex marriage, the measure was passed without amendments and on the first vote, meaning it won't have to be returned to the lower chamber for consideration, France's version of The Local reported Wednesday...............

While the vote does not formally write same-sex marriage into French law, the Senate would have to reject the entire bill to prevent it from becoming law, officials said.
"The adoption of this article by a united Senate majority, puts an end to discrimination resulting from the sexual choices of our citizens," Rebsamen said.
The Senate is expected to vote on the entire bill in several weeks.
France's highest court, the Constitutional Council, which has the power to reject legislation if it is contrary to the country's constitution, already said it would accept what lawmakers decide, The Local.fr reported.
France would become the 12th country to legalize same-sex marriage if lawmakers approve the bill.

The real threat of the escalation of hostilities on the Korean peninsular - and consequently the world - comes not from North Korea, but from the United States itself, political analyst Michel Chossudovsky told RT.

The director of the Centre for Research on Globalization (www.globalresearch.ca) and professor of economics at the University of Ottawa believes it is the US which is trying to light a match.

"Just a few weeks ago it was revealed that the Pentagon had implemented a so-called playbook, which was to ratchet up tension with North Korea. During the war games it has dispatched [nuclear capable planes]... We have to put it in historical perspective, because these threats have been ongoing for more than half a century, since the end of the Korean War," he said.

Chossudovsky also added that it does not seem at all that the world is serious in its intentions at curbing nuclear threats as such: "Looking at US nuclear doctrine, we have a $32 billion refurbishing of nuclear weapons, which is barely acknowledged by the mainstream media. We have a $10 billion refurbishing of tactical nuclear weapons, which can be launched from a B-2 bomber, which have currently been deployed. And then we have a Senate decision which says that nuclear weapons are harmless to the surrounding civilian population and can be used in the conventional war theater."

When asked what tactics could possibly be implemented to avert the current crisis, Chossudovsky said that he sees a way out if "the people across the land, in Western countries, come to realize that the United States and NATO are a threat to global security, and if they wish to wage a pre-emptive nuclear war on any country in the world, that is a prelude to global warfare."
